Seondol in Seoktan-ri, Okcheon
옥천 석탄리 선돌 · 沃川 石灘里 立石

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krIpseok, or seondol — a standing stone — is set up at the entrance to a village in the hope of warding off calamity and bringing peace and a bountiful harvest to the village. This standing stone, located at the entrance to Seoktan-ri village, is called "Grandmother" by local residents, and serves as a guardian deity that wards off calamity and protects a good harvest and peace. Overall it takes the form of an elongated natural stone standing upright, with a bulge in its middle section. A circle roughly 90 cm across has been carved into this middle section; this is understood to symbolise a pregnant woman, carved in the wish of the people of that time for many children. Dolmens are also found distributed around the standing stone, suggesting that it also carried the character of an ancestral spirit. Both the dolmens and the standing stone stand at Anteo, part of the Okcheon Seoktan-ri site, and since coarse-patterned jeulmun (comb-pattern) pottery has been found around the dolmens, it is thought that they were erected in the late Neolithic period.
