This is the birthplace of the mid-Joseon scholar Nammyeong Jo Sik (1501–1572). Living in the same era as Yi Hwang, the great scholar of Left Gyeongsang Province, Jo Sik was a Confucian scholar representing Right Gyeongsang Province, and the two were regarded as equally matched rivals of the highest rank. His writings include the Nammyeonghakgi Yupyeon and the Nammyeongjip, among others. He placed particular emphasis on the spirit of the scholar (seonbi) who respects righteousness (ui) and reverent self-discipline (gyeong) and puts knowledge into practice. It is said that twenty years after Jo Sik's death, during the Japanese invasion of 1592 (the 25th year of King Seonjo), some ten or so of his disciples, including Jeong In-hong and Gwak Jae-u, raised righteous armies (uibyeong, volunteer militia) and personally put their teacher's teachings into practice.
