Among the irrigation reservoirs built in the Silla period, Cheongje is the only one in Korea that still survives and continues to be used for irrigation. It is presumed to have been built in 476 or in 536, before the twenty-third year of King Beopheung's reign, and the fact that 7,000 labourers were mobilised for its construction suggests a project carried out at the level of the state. Techniques using wooden palisades and stakes were employed to reinforce the embankment firmly, and a wooden sluice gate is said to have been installed, from which the reservoir's function can be inferred. It is a valuable historical source that allows us to grasp the state of irrigation facilities of the period and to estimate agricultural productivity at the time.
