Royal Consort Sinbin of the Kim clan (1406-1464) was a consort of King Sejong; her clan seat was Cheongpung. She was originally a servant girl at the Naejasi (Bureau of Royal Provisions), but in the year of King Sejong's accession, at the age of 13, she was selected by Queen Wongyeong and sent to serve in the queen's residence. In 1435 she became a royal consort and bore five princes including Prince Gyeyang; after giving birth to her fifth son, Prince Yeonghae, she was elevated to the rank of Soui, and in 1439 to the rank of Gwiin. When King Sejong died, Sinbin shaved her head and became a Buddhist nun; King Danjong urged her to return to lay life, but she never agreed to do so. Royal Consort Sinbin bore six sons and two daughters: Prince Gyeyang (Yi Jeung), Prince Uichang (Yi Gang), Prince Milseong (Yi Chim), Prince Ikhyeon (Yi Gwan), Prince Yeonghae (Yi Dang) and Prince Damyang (Yi Geo); her daughters both died young. The tomb of Royal Consort Sinbin is enclosed by a gokjang, a low curved wall around the burial mound. In front of the mound stand a stone table, an incense-burner stone and a stone lantern, flanked on either side by a pair of civil-official stone statues; of these, only the statues in bokdu-gongbok form (official hat and robes) date from the 15th century. To the east of the tomb stands a stele pavilion housing a memorial stele (sindobi). The memorial stele of Royal Consort Sinbin, erected in 1465, has a haeyeopsubangbu form, a lotus-leaf-shaped stele head set on a square base; the text was composed by Kim Su-on, and the calligraphy and seal-script heading were written by An Hye. The seal-script inscription reads "Tomb Stele of Royal Consort Sinbin of the Kim Clan," identifying it as her memorial stele.
