This is the birthplace site of righteous army commander Sintaesik. His childhood name was Cheolhoe (哲會), his pen name was Doam (島蓭), and his clan seat was Pyeongsan (平山). He was born in Donae-dong, Minji-ri, Gaeun-myeon, Mungyeong-gun, and carried out anti-Japanese righteous army activities, for which he was awarded the National Medal of the Order of Merit for National Foundation. According to his biographical record (haengjang), he raised a righteous army in 1907 and achieved military successes across a wide area, from Mungyeong, Danyang, Pyeonghae and Yeongyang in Gyeongsang-do to Uljin, Yeongwol, Sandong, Jecheon, Wonju, Hongcheon, Chuncheon, Hwacheon, Cheorwon, Singye and Goksan in Gangwon-do. However, righteous army activity was curtailed by large-scale Japanese mopping-up operations, and in 1908 he was shot in the left leg and captured at the Battle of Yeongpyeong in Gyeonggi-do, remaining imprisoned until February 1919. He subsequently became head of the Gyeongbuk Uiyongdan (Gyeongbuk Volunteer Corps) under the Daehan Dongnip Undong Huwon Uiyongdan (Volunteer Corps in Support of the Korean Independence Movement), but was discovered at an early stage and spent a further year in prison. During the righteous army movement, General Sin also composed the "Changuiga" (Song of Raising a Righteous Army) and two versions of the "Dapsanga." In 2000, a memorial stele (yuheobi) and a marker stone for the birthplace site were erected, and in 2003 a shrine was completed. Righteous army commander Sintaesik was an outstanding leader of the anti-Japanese independence movement in this region; together with righteous army commander Yi Gang-nyeon, he stands, not only for Mungyeong-gun but at a national level, as a model for education in national spirit, a historical figure whose example is worth carrying forward.
