Yangpyeong Sinbongnigangmaenggyeong Burial Ground
양평신복리강맹경묘역 · 楊平新福里姜孟卿墓域

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the burial ground of Kang Maeng-gyeong (姜孟卿, 1410–1461), a civil official of the early Joseon period whose ancestral seat was Jinju. In 1453, during the Gyeyu jeongnan (a palace coup), he assisted Grand Prince Suyang, and in 1455, for his part in the accession of King Sejo following King Danjong's abdication, he was ranked second class among the Jwaik Merit Subjects and invested as Prince Jinsan. The burial ground consists of Kang Maeng-gyeong's tomb on the upper site and, below it, the tomb of his son Kang Yun-beom. Kang Maeng-gyeong's tomb is a paired mound shared with his wife, Lady Yun of Papyeong, Lady of Yeongcheon County; in front of each mound stands a stone figure and a gravestone erected in modern times. Before these stand a square stone lantern and a pair of stone statues of civil officials. The lantern is an outstanding example of its type from the late fifteenth century, and the statues wear everyday dress rather than the ceremonial court robes of a court cap and gown or a gilt-crowned court robe; similar statues of officials or attendants date from the same period, and an identical type can be seen at the tomb of Kang Maeng-gyeong's cousin Kang Hui-an. Before Kang Yun-beom's tomb stands Kang Maeng-gyeong's memorial stele, erected by Kang Yun-beom in 1462, its head shaped like a lotus leaf above a square base. The inscription was composed by Sin Suk-ju, with the text and its seal-script title written by Kang Hui-an; the inscription on the reverse was composed by Kang Hui-maeng.
