Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krIchi Pass, crossing the flank of Daedunsan Mountain into Wanju-gun in North Jeolla Province, is a key transport route and a strategically vital location. In 1592, during the Japanese invasions, a Japanese force of some 20,000 men, having swept triumphantly through Gyeongsang and Chungcheong provinces, attempted to cross this pass into the Honam region to seize military provisions. General Gwon Yul, who had already taken position to guard the pass, fought a desperate battle alongside Hwang Jin, magistrate of Dongbok, and some 1,500 troops, and repelled the Japanese force, thereby saving Jeonju Fortress and the Honam plain. This battle, the first Korean victory of the Japanese invasions, is known as the Battle of Ichi. Buoyed by this success, General Gwon Yul went on to lead Korean forces to victory in the Battle of Haengju and the Battle of Ungchi.
