Jukbyeon Lighthouse, built in November 1910, was the first lighthouse erected in the Uljin area. The tower is a four-storey, octagonal concrete structure 15.6m high, tapering towards the top to give an impression of stability and vertical uplift. In June 1950, during the Korean War, bombing put the lighthouse out of action, but the tower was repaired and restored in October 1951. In April 1970 a fog signal (an acoustic signal device) was installed, allowing it to guide ships' courses even in fog or storms. Jukbyeon Lighthouse was built to guide vessels sailing the coast of the Donghae (East Sea), and functions not only as a landmark of the area but also, as a piece of modern heritage embodying the joys, sorrows and history of local fishermen. It remains in good condition, its wall surfaces and formal elements harmonising well to give an overall impression of stability and beauty.
