Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone-built fortress stands in Yeoho-ri, Jeomam-myeon, Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, backed to the south by Palyeongsan Mountain. Fronted by Wonjudo Island, and encircled by the islands of Naebaegildo, Umodo and Gyedo to the north and Hyangdo Island to the east, it occupies a key maritime position — a natural stronghold able to defend the waters of Yeoja Bay. According to the naval organisation of Jeolla Province recorded in the Sejong sillok jiriji (the Geographical Appendix to the Veritable Records of King Sejong), the Jeolla Naval Commander's headquarters was established in Muan-hyeon, with Left and Right Do-manho garrisons set up beneath it; this site was the Left Do-manho Garrison. It served as the naval headquarters for Left Jeolla Province, commanding eight naval manho garrisons. According to the Seongjong sillok (Veritable Records of King Seongjong), the fortress was built in 1491, the 22nd year of King Seongjong, with a circumference of 1,320 cheok and a height of 15 cheok (cheok being a traditional unit of length). Today, apart from the west wall (95m long, 1.8m high), most of the wall survives only in outline, though traces of former gate openings can still be identified on the west, south and north sides.
