Naju Songje-ri Ancient Tomb
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This tomb lies where a low ridge extending east from Mount Taesan meets Geumcheon Stream, a tributary of the Yeongsangang River. Originally there were two tombs at this site, but one was destroyed, leaving only one standing. Although the ceiling of the surviving tomb has been damaged and all of its burial goods looted, its internal structure remains almost perfectly intact. It is a stone chamber tomb with a horizontal entrance passage (gulsik dolbang mudeom), featuring a semicircular, vaulted ceiling (hwalcheonjeong, or gungnyung-sik cheonjeong). The entrance passage (yeondo) is set at the centre of the burial chamber (hyeonsil), and the structure narrows from the chamber towards the entrance. The walls of the chamber were built of broken stones, rising vertically for about 80cm from the floor, above which the corners were trimmed so that the ceiling narrows to one-third the width of the chamber floor. The Songje-ri Tomb is the only stone chamber tomb with a horizontal entrance passage and a vaulted ceiling yet discovered in the Jeonnam region, making it an extremely important site for the study of ancient tombs.
