Beacon Station on Bonghwa Mountain, Changwon
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

A beacon station (bongsudae) was an old means of communication that used torches and smoke to send urgent news. Watchmen climbed high mountains and lit fires, signalling by smoke in the daytime and by firelight at night. The Bonghwa Mountain Beacon Station, situated on Bonghwasan Mountain (265 m above sea level), a ridge of Muhaksan Mountain, is presumed to have been built in the late Goryeo period as a means of alerting Seoul to emergencies such as invasions by Japanese pirates (waegu). This station formed part of the beacon route running from Dongnae to the central beacon station on Mongmyeoksan Mountain in Seoul (present-day Namsan Mountain). The line began at Dadaepo Beacon Station in Dongnae, then passed through Gosan Beacon Station in Jinhae, Bonghwa Mountain Beacon Station, Angoksan Beacon Station in Chilseo, Haman, and Sosan Beacon Station in Changnyeong, before finally reaching Mongmyeoksan Beacon Station in Seoul.
