A beacon station (bongsudae) was an old means of communication used to send urgent news by torch fire and smoke: a signal fire was lit atop a high mountain, sending word by smoke during the day and by firelight at night. The Gwangjesan beacon station is presumed to have been built during the reign of King Sejong of Joseon (r. 1418-1450), and formed part of the beacon relay running from Dongnae to the central beacon station on Mongmyeoksan Mountain (present-day Namsan) in Seoul. This station was linked to the south with the Mangjinsan beacon station and to the north with the Ibamsan beacon station in Danseong; today only partial traces of it remain.
