A yoji (kiln site) is a kiln where porcelain, roof tiles and other vessels were made and fired. The Ungcheon kiln site is located in Jeomgol, at the foot of Bobaesan Mountain, and is known by several names, including the Dudong kiln site and the Geumgok kiln site; it produced buncheong ware (grey-blue stoneware decorated with white slip) during the Joseon period. Although the kiln site has been damaged by looting, excavations there and in its surroundings have yielded bowls, large bowls and dishes, as well as buncheong ware decorated with brush-stroke (gwiyal) patterns and dipped (deombeong) slip designs. This suggests that the kiln was built and operated during the 15th–16th centuries, the final stage in which Joseon buncheong ware was giving way to white porcelain, before being abandoned following the Japanese invasions of Korea (Imjin War).
