Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDolmens (jiseokmyo) are the representative tombs of the Bronze Age, also known as goindol, and are generally believed to be the tombs of a ruling class with economic or political power. Korean dolmens fall into two main types: the table-type (takja-sik), in which four supporting stones are set upright to form a stone chamber topped with a huge, flat capstone, and the go-board type (badukpan-sik), in which a stone chamber is built underground with small supporting stones set beneath the capstone. This dolmen group, located in Gwayeong-ri, Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, is of the go-board type, with more than fifty dolmens clustered together in one place. The largest capstones measure 4-5m in length and 2.5-3m in width, while the smaller capstones measure 0.6-1.5m in length. Stone arrowheads, stone daggers and lute-shaped bronze daggers, together with other weapons, as well as red burnished pottery and ornamental jade, have been excavated, and around the tombs many stone tools and pottery fragments used in daily life have also been found. As one of the few representative dolmen groups in Korea, clustered around its large dolmens, it provides valuable material for studying dolmen society of the Bronze Age.
