Dangjin Seongsangnisanseong Fortress

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDangjin Seongsangnisanseong Fortress is a temoe-sik mountain fortress — a type that rings a hill just below its summit — centred on a peak 119m above sea level marking the boundary between Seongsang-ri and Samung-ri in Myeoncheon-myeon; its walls were built by piling up earth cut from the slopes inside the fortress. It measures about 400m in circumference, with outer wall faces about 4–5m high, inner faces about 1–1.5m high, and a wall base 1–2m thick. Its date of construction is not known for certain, but it is the oldest-style fortress within the Myeoncheon area and was very likely the administrative seat of Mahan or Baekje, making it valuable material for clarifying the history of Myeoncheon, which was the administrative and military centre of Dangjin County.
