Gogunhyeon Chisoji Site, Geoje
거제 고군현 치소지 · 巨濟 古郡縣 治所址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis site is known to have been where the government office of Giseong-hyeon, an administrative district established around 983, once stood. Recent excavations have unearthed Goryeo-period eave-end roof tiles, inscribed roof tiles, pottery fragments from both Silla and Goryeo, fragments of Goryeo celadon, and fragments of buncheong ware, as well as the foundation stones of a building whose form could not be determined. This suggests that buildings stood on the site from the Silla period through Goryeo and into early Joseon, and the scale of the foundation stones together with the large quantity of roof-tile fragments indicate that a large wooden building, such as a government office, once stood here. This site is also known as the location of Pyewangseong, the 'Deposed King's Fortress,' where King Uijong (r. 1146-1170) stayed after fleeing the rebellion of Jeong Jung-bu during the Goryeo period, and the inscribed roof tiles found in the excavation lend further credibility to this account.
