청주한씨문익공파묘역 · 淸州韓氏文翼公派墓域

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the family burial ground of Han Jun-gyeom (1557-1627), a civil official of mid-Joseon and father-in-law of King Injo, together with his descendants. Centred on the tomb of Han Jun-gyeom, the burial ground also includes the tomb of his son Han Hoe-il to the left, that of his grandson Han I-seong to the right, and that of his great-grandson Han Du-sang in front, spanning four generations. Han Jun-gyeom's tomb takes the form of a single mound, jointly interred with his wife, Lady Hwang. It is a model burial ground that well illustrates tomb customs of the first half of the seventeenth century, evenly equipped with everything from the gravestone to the boy-attendant stone figures and the stone lantern. The gravestone, made in 1628, the fifth year of King Injo, is a neat marble stele. The boy-attendant stone figures have their hair tied in the ssanggye style, with two topknots rising upward, and are elaborately decorated. In particular, their bodies are turned slightly toward the burial mound, angled so as to be symmetrical with the figure facing them, making for unique sculptures. The capstone of the stone lantern is a later addition, but the body of the lantern retains the style of the original. The memorial stele was erected in 1629, the sixth year of King Injo; its inscription was composed by Yi Jeong-gu and written out by O Jun. It takes the grand isugwibu form, a stele with a capstone carved with dragon motifs set upon a tortoise-shaped base, and both the capstone and the body of the stele are made of marble. The grand tortoise base, the stable sense of proportion, the marble with its bluish tinge, and the vivid, outstanding carving make it a representative work of the late Joseon period. This family burial ground serves as a model for seventeenth-century tomb customs; its stone furnishings are varied, and the carvings of the boy-attendant stone figures and the memorial stele are of high artistic merit, making it a cultural heritage of outstanding value.
