Dangjin Anguksa Temple Jimaehyangamgak Pavilion is a single natural boulder measuring 2.93m in height, 13.35m in length and 2.5m in width. Because its shape resembles a boat, a whale, or the shuttle of a loom, it is also known as Baebawi (Boat Rock), Goraebawi (Whale Rock) or Bukbawi (Shuttle Rock), and its head faces east. The inscriptions carved on Baebawi record maehyang, the ritual burial of fragrant wood believed to produce incense for welcoming a future Buddha, and date from the late Goryeo to early Joseon period, making them relatively early among the maehyang inscriptions found nationwide. As they record two instances of maehyang carried out at different times, they are valued as precious material for establishing the history of the Anguksa temple site and its surrounding area, and for understanding the maehyang ritual.
