Gyeolseongeupseong Walled Town, Hongseong, was built by expanding and incorporating most of Seokdangsanseong Fortress, which had originally served as the seat of government of Gyeolseong-hyeon county. Its construction was completed in 1451, and it is recorded in sources such as the Sejong sillok jiriji (the Geographical Appendix to the Veritable Records of King Sejong), the Sinjeung Dongguk yeoji seungnam, the Chungcheongdo eupji, and the Yeojido seo. The wall of Gyeolseongeupseong measures about 1,554 m in total length and consists of an east gate, a west gate, five chiseong (projecting bastions), and a moat. As was typical of the early Joseon period, the outer stone facing was built using the layered rubble-wall technique, with large stones at the base and progressively smaller stones toward the top. Notably, the characters 牙山始面 ("Asan simyeon") are carved into the northeastern wall. This marks the section built by people from Asan (present-day Asan-si, Chungcheongnam-do), indicating that should problems arise in that section, the county that had built it would be responsible for its repair. There were originally 17 government office buildings inside the walled town; today only the dongheon (the magistrate's main hall), hyeongbangcheong (the office of criminal affairs), and chaeksil (records room) remain, and the east gate has been restored.
