Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDaepungheon Hall is a building where sutosa, government inspectors dispatched in the Joseon period to patrol and survey Ulleungdo Island, stayed at Gusanpo while waiting for a favourable wind before setting sail. The exact date of its construction cannot be confirmed, but according to a record of repairs to the Gusan-dongsa (village hall), the building was repaired in 1851 (the second year of King Cheoljong) and a signboard reading "Daepungheon" was hung at that time. The building is a single-row, hip-and-gable-roofed structure with four bays across the front (south side), four bays on the right (west) side, and three bays on the left (east) side. It stands facing south at the centre of Gusan-ri, a small fishing village on the coast of the East Sea (Donghae), and is currently used as a meeting hall by the villagers. Daepungheon Hall is a building where sutosa travelling from Gusanpo on the east coast to Ulleungdo Island during the Joseon period waited for favourable winds; it shows distinctive features in its floor plan and in some of its framing techniques, but as the building as a whole had been altered and transformed to the point where its original form could barely be recognised, it was dismantled and restored in 2010. As a building where the sutosa who oversaw Ulleungdo Island during the Joseon period stayed while waiting for the wind, it holds great historical significance.
