This is the burial ground of Yi Bangseok (1382–1398), Grand Prince Uian, the eighth son of King Taejo of Joseon. Grand Prince Uian was born to Queen Sindeok and, following the founding of Joseon in 1392, was invested as the dynasty's first Crown Prince. In 1397 (the sixth year of King Taejo), Grand Prince Uian married Lady Sim (d. 1448), Royal Consort Hyeonbin, daughter of Sim Hyo-saeng, and a son was born to them the following year, 1398. However, he was killed along with Jeong Do-jeon, Sim Hyo-saeng, and others during the First Strife of Princes. In 1670, when Queen Sindeok's spirit tablet was enshrined in the royal ancestral shrine, he was posthumously honoured in 1680 with the title Grand Prince Uian, and his wife, Lady Sim, was posthumously honoured as Samhan-guk Daebuin ("Grand Lady of the Three Han States"). As Grand Prince Uian had no heir, in 1437 Yi Yu, Grand Prince Geumseong and a son of King Sejong, was adopted as his heir, and a shrine was built to carry out ancestral rites for him. However, after Grand Prince Geumseong was executed for having been behind the attempt to restore King Danjong to the throne, King Sejo had Yi Dang, Prince Chunseong, adopted as heir to Grand Prince Uian in his place. Grand Prince Uian's grave is arranged as an upper-and-lower pair with that of his wife, Lady Sim: his mound lies above, hers below, and each mound is enclosed by a square border of guard stones built of long dressed stones. In front of each mound stands a memorial stele topped with a hayeopsu, a stele-head shaped like a lotus leaf; the Grand Prince's stele was erected in February 1449, and his wife's in May of the same year. In front of the wife's stele stand two pairs of civil-official stone statues dressed in a bokdu cap and gongbok official robes, which, together with the steles, are presumed to have been erected by Grand Prince Geumseong around 1449.
