Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a pond associated with a story about General Park Gon (1370–1454), a military official of the early Joseon period. It lies near Eobyeondang, Park Gon's birthplace, in Yeonsang-ri, Muan-myeon, Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-do. When Park Gon was a child, his mother once said she wanted to eat fish, but as it was winter it was difficult to catch any. Knowing this well, he nevertheless went to the stream in front of the village, broke the ice and fished, serving her the catch. Thinking of a way to keep serving his mother fish, the young Park Gon dug a small pond in the yard of his house and raised fish in it, and in that pond a fish with unusually red scales grew to a large size. One day the fish appeared in his dream transformed into a dragon, saying, "Your filial devotion is so deep that I will reward you — keep this carefully," and when he woke, he found a red scale lying at his bedside. It is said that afterwards, even as Park Gon held various official posts, he governed the people with the same careful devotion he showed his mother and set an example for his subordinate officials, so that wherever he served, praise for him never ceased.
