An eupseong (walled town) is a fortified town that protected the residents of a gun or hyeon, a county-level administrative unit, while serving both military and administrative functions. Miryang Walled Town, in Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-do, was built in 1479, the tenth year of King Seongjong — more than 100 years earlier than other walled towns, most of which were not begun until just before the Japanese invasions of 1592. According to the Dongguk yeoji seungnam (Augmented Survey of the Geography of Korea), the town wall had a circumference of 4,670 cheok and a height of 9 cheok, with four wells and one pond inside. In 1902, during construction of the Gyeongbu Railway Line, the gates and walls were entirely demolished and the materials used for the railway works, so that today only the site of the gates and part of the wall remain. Along the ridge connecting Adongsan Mountain and Abuksan Mountain, sections of the fortress wall still survive.
