공주금학동고분군 · 公州錦鶴洞古墳群

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Gongju Geumhak-dong Tumuli lie at the upper part of the Gongju Tunnel, which connects Ongnyong-dong and Geumhak-dong at the southwestern foot of Wolseongsan Mountain southeast of Gongju; this general area has traditionally been known as Muanju. During the Japanese colonial period, six side-entrance stone-chamber tombs were discovered and reported following investigation. In the 1960s, one corbel-vaulted stone-chamber tomb was found, and in 1989, during construction of the Gongju Tunnel, two further side-entrance stone-chamber tombs were recovered and investigated. In an excavation in 2000, a total of 43 features were discovered: 21 side-entrance stone-chamber tombs, 2 side-opening stone-lined tombs, 3 vertical-pit stone-lined tombs, 3 stone-lined jar-coffin burials, 9 pit burials, 1 outer-enclosure tomb, 3 pit features, and 1 feature of unknown type. The discovery, in the 2000 excavation, of a dense concentration of 43 well-preserved Baekje-period tombs provides invaluable material for the study of Baekje burial customs, and the gold and silver artefacts excavated from these tombs are valuable academic material for research into the ruling class of Baekje during the Ungjin period.
