Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe site at Hyuam-ri, in Haemi-myeon, lies where the Haemi Stream meets seawater and fresh water, a location well suited to the formation of a prehistoric culture. In 1970 the National Museum of Korea carried out four seasons of excavation, confirming eleven pit dwellings, one buseok yugu (a stone-paved feature), one stone mound and one open-air hearth. Comb-pattern pottery sherds of the Neolithic period were recovered from the stone-paved feature, while the plain coarse pottery included bowls, dishes, cups and long-necked jars, and the stone tools included arrowheads, stone daggers, stone chisels, whetstones, half-moon-shaped stone knives, stone axes and spindle whorls. Excavation showed that the site was formed around the eighth century BC, spanning the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, and it provides valuable material for examining the cultural character of the middle Bronze Age in particular.
