A beacon station (bongsudae) was an old means of communication that used torch fires and smoke to convey urgent news. Signals were sent by lighting fires atop high mountains—smoke by day and firelight by night. The Gaeulpo Beacon Station stands on a ridge on the hill behind Gwangam Village in Jindong-myeon, and it is a branch beacon (gan-bong), an intermediate relay point on the beacon route leading to the central beacon station on Mongmyeoksan Mountain (present-day Namsan) in Seoul. The Gaeulpo Beacon Station was linked to Jinhae-eupseong (the walled town of Jinhae); it received signals from the neighbouring Usan Beacon and Goksan Beacon in Goseong, and relayed them on to the Pasan Beacon in Haman and the Gamaksan Beacon in Uiryeong. At present, a single hearth has been restored inside a circular stone platform about 13 m in diameter, but because the restoration was carried out without proper scholarly verification, its original form has suffered considerable damage.
