Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Chungnyeolgong Bak Won-jong Burial Ground is the family cemetery of Bak Won-jong (1467–1510), a meritorious subject of the 1506 Restoration of King Jungjong, and his kin. The site contains numerous graves of the Bak family, including those of Bak Won-jong himself, his father Bak Jung-seon, and his son Bak Un. At Bak Won-jong's own grave, a tombstone, an offering table, an incense-burner stone and a stone lantern stand in sequence before the mound, flanked on either side by ornamental stone pillars and stone civil-official figures. The spirit-path stele is of hornless-dragon-head, square-based (isubangbu) form; its inscription was both composed and written by Sin Yong-gae, and it was erected in June 1511. The carving of the dragon-head cap on this stele is exceptionally fine, and it is regarded as a model work among sixteenth-century spirit-path steles. Below Bak Won-jong's grave lies that of his son Bak Un, furnished with a tombstone, a spirit-seat stone (honyuseok), an offering table, an incense-burner stone and stone civil-official figures. Bak Un's tombstone is notably carved with a three-legged crow at the top of its front face and a moon rabbit on its reverse. West of Bak Won-jong's grave is the grave of his father Bak Jung-seon, equipped with an offering table, an incense-burner stone, ornamental stone pillars and stone civil-official figures, along with a spirit-path stele erected in 1490. This burial ground of Bak Won-jong is a site of great importance for the study of early sixteenth-century tomb systems and stone furnishings.
