The site sits on a very gently sloping hill leading into the alluvial plain south of Tangeumdae in Chungju, and is one of the largest ironworking production complexes in the central and southern Korean peninsula, making it important for understanding the character and reality of iron production in ancient Korea. The double damp-proofing facility identified at this ironworking site in Chilgeum-dong, Chungju, is the first of its kind to be found, and carries great significance for the history of ancient Korean ironworking. No other site of comparable scale for iron production has been investigated, and the method used to build the furnaces for long-term operation — constructed in three superimposed layers, lower, middle and upper — together with its technique, is highly unusual and original.
