Jeongjae Head House, Andong
안동 정재종택 · 安東 定齋宗宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the head house (jongtaek) of Jeongjae Yu Chi-myeong (1777–1861), who carried on the scholarship of Toegye Yi Hwang. The house was built by his great-grandfather Yu Gwan-hyeon in 1735, the eleventh year of King Yeongjo of Joseon. It originally stood in Imdong-myeon, but was relocated to its present site in 1987 owing to the construction of the Imha Dam. It consists of a gate quarters, a main hall (jeongchim), and a shrine. The jeongchim, which includes both the women's quarters (anchae) and the men's quarters (sarangchae), has a square (ㅁ-shaped) floor plan. The sarangchae is arranged at the front and the anchae at the rear, but the front and rear spaces are not connected on the inside and are kept separate; access from the sarangchae to the anchae is possible only through a middle gate on the right side of the building. The division between the anchae and sarangchae is clearly marked, and the house is a traditional dwelling that has retained its old appearance relatively well.
