Hamyang Baekcheon-ri Tumuli
함양백천리고분군 · 咸陽白川里古墳群

These are Gaya-period tombs distributed over low hills beside the Namgyecheon Stream, near Cheokji village in Baekcheon-ri. Five tombs were found, together with 21 small pit-style stone-lined tombs (suhyeolsik seokgwakmyo) scattered around them. The tombs retain round mounds, and the burial chambers are rectangular in plan. The side walls are all built of river stones, and a subsidiary chamber, itself a pit-style stone-lined chamber, is always placed alongside the main chamber to its east or west, forming a multi-chamber tomb in which the main and subsidiary chambers stand in balanced arrangement. The small pit-style stone-lined tombs scattered around the main tombs are all badly damaged, with none surviving intact, and they too are of the common type built of river stones. More than 200 artefacts have been excavated, including pottery, ironware and ornaments, most of them pottery. The tombs are generally dated to between the late fifth century and the early sixth century. The Hamyang Baekcheon-ri tombs show that a small Gaya state, not previously recorded in any document, once existed in this region, and they provide important material for the study of the tombs and culture of this area.
