This academy began when local literati, wishing to cultivate the next generation of scholars, built Uisan Seodang on the site of Haengeuisa in Uisan Village (Bunjigeoreung-gol), Seonggok 2-ri, in 1610, the second year of King Gwanghaegun. In 1664, the fifth year of King Hyeonjong, a shrine was built to enshrine the spirit tablet of Seongodang Yi Gae-rip, and it was known as Jeolhyosa; in 1679, the fifth year of King Sukjong, it was elevated to the status of a seowon (Confucian academy) when Haksa Kim Eung-jo was also enshrined there. It was abolished during the reign of Emperor Gojong, but was restored on its present site in 1970, at which time Jeolhyosa was renamed Gyeongdeoksa. The academy's buildings—Yangjoldang, Uisan Seodang, the inner three-bay gate, and the shrine—are arranged in a straight line, though each building is set at a slight offset from the next. Uisanseowon became a base for the Confucian scholars who shaped the public opinion that led the local community of Yeongju, and it was an important educational institution that produced many successful candidates in the state examinations; the tradition of seasonal memorial rites continues there to this day.
