Hamyang Palryeongsanseong Fortress
함양팔령산성 · 咸陽八嶺山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis mountain fortress was built along the upper ridge of Seongsan Mountain — about nine-tenths of the way to the summit — at Palryeong Pass, on the boundary between Hamyang County, South Gyeongsang Province, and Namwon, North Jeolla Province. Based on records in the Sinjeung Dongguk yeoji seungnam, it is thought to have been built during the Silla period. Today the walls have mostly collapsed, but the north-western section is relatively well preserved. They were built using natural stone dressed into rectangular blocks together with broken stone; the fortress is about 500 m in circumference, and its best-preserved sections stand about 3 m high. The site of the west gate was built up outside the main wall like a small enclosure, showing that it was rebuilt at a later date. This fortress was a strategic stronghold: it is said that at the end of Goryeo, and again during the Japanese invasions of 1592, Japanese troops who had captured Hamyang's Sageunsanseong Fortress and were advancing on Unbong were decisively defeated here.
