Hamyang Maansanseong Fortress
함양마안산성 · 咸陽馬鞍山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krMaansanseong Fortress, in Hamyang County, South Gyeongsang Province, is a ring-shaped mountain fortress built encircling the summit of Maansan Mountain, at an elevation of about 508 m. Its walls were built using natural stone; although they are now badly damaged, making the date uncertain, the fortress is thought to have been built before the Joseon period. Considering nearby fortresses such as Sageunsanseong Fortress and Hwangseoksanseong Fortress, it appears to have been built during the Three Kingdoms period or the Goryeo period as a defence for local residents, making it important material for the study of mountain fortresses. The fortress is now largely in ruins, with only partial traces remaining. The best-preserved section, the south wall, was built of natural stone and survives to a height of 2 m and a length of 50 m.
