Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Gudongyangcheoksikjusikoesamokpo Branch is the building that housed the Mokpo branch of the Dongyang Cheoksik Jusik Hoesa (Oriental Development Company), an organisation that exploited Joseon farmers during the Japanese colonial period. The Oriental Development Company was established in Korea in 1908 to monopolise and exploit the Korean economy. In the case of the Mokpo branch, a field office was set up in 1909 at Yeongsanpo in Naju; as Mokpo grew rapidly after the opening of its port, the office was moved to Mokpo in June 1920 and upgraded to a full branch. The present building was newly constructed in 1921. The Oriental Development Company's Mokpo branch stood on the busiest street in the city during the Japanese colonial period, and is known as the branch that collected the largest amount of farm rent of any branch nationwide. At present, among branch buildings of the company in South Korea, only those in Busan and Mokpo survive. This building is larger in scale than the Busan branch, and was also established earlier.
