This is a seowon (a Confucian academy for study and ancestral rites) built to commemorate Gwon Ho-mun, pen name Songam (1532–1587). Gwon Ho-mun was a literary scholar of the reign of King Seonjo of Joseon (r. 1567–1608) who spent his whole life living in seclusion in nature, and whose high standing drew many scholars to visit him. The academy was founded in 1608, the 41st year of King Seonjo's reign, and from 1612, the 4th year of King Gwanghaegun, it enshrined his spirit tablet and held memorial rites there; it was moved to its present site in 1767, the 43rd year of King Yeongjo. In 1868, the 5th year of Emperor Gojong, it was torn down under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing seowon academies, but it was restored on its old site in 1909 at the wishes of Confucian scholars throughout the province. Within the academy stand seven buildings in all: a lecture hall, east and west dormitories, Jeongdomun Gate, Cheongpungsa Shrine, a hall for preparing ritual offerings (jeonsacheong), and an inner spirit gate (sinmun). Memorial rites are still held here every year in February and August.
