A beacon station (bongsudae) was a traditional means of communication used to relay urgent news by torch fire and smoke: signals were sent by smoke during the day and by firelight at night from a high mountain. This beacon station stands at the summit of a peak 310 m above sea level, on a ridge extending from Waryongsan Mountain in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province. The remains of the beacon station site and a fortress wall about 100 m in circumference survived, and in 1994 five beacon-fire stations and 100 m of the fortress wall were restored to their original form. According to the Gyeongsangdo sokchan jiriji, a supplementary geographical record of Gyeongsang Province, it was linked to the south with the Gaksan beacon station and to the north with the Mangjinsan beacon station in Jinju, and it is presumed to have been established during the reign of King Sejong of Joseon.
