무안용정리곰솔 · 무안용정리곰솔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe black pine (gomsol) belongs to the pine family and is named for its needles, which are coarser than those of the common pine. Because it grows along the coast it is also called haesong, or "sea pine", and because the bark of its trunk is darker than that of the common pine it is also known as heuksong, or "black pine". It withstands sea winds and salt well and is often planted as a windbreak or coastal shelterbelt. The Muan Yongjeong-ri black pine grows on the coast, with a girth of 3.6 m at its larger trunk and 2.3 m at its smaller trunk. Apart from some dead branches near the base, the tree is in very good condition and has a beautiful form. Villagers regard the tree as sacred and hold a rite to the mountain spirit at it every year. Having lived for a long time under the care and attention of past generations, the Muan Yongjeong-ri black pine has been recognised for its biological and folkloric conservation value and is designated and protected as a monument.
