Songjae Yi U (1469–1517) built this hall to teach his nephews Ongye and Toegye, as well as Jo Hyo-yeon and others. Later, Toegye Yi Hwang stayed here to study Neo-Confucianism and to train the next generation of scholars. Yi Hwang (1501–1570) was such an outstanding Neo-Confucian scholar that he was called "the Zhu Xi of the East", and he lived a frugal life throughout his years. He came here to follow his uncle Yi U and pursue his studies. It was here, too, that he researched Neo-Confucianism, trained younger scholars, and is said to have composed Dosan Sibigok, a set of twelve songs in vernacular Korean verse. The building has a frontage of five bays and a depth of one and a half bays.
