Yeosa-ul, an early stronghold for the spread of Catholicism in the Naepo region, was the cradle from which the Chungcheong-do church community was founded, and it holds the birthplace site of Yi Jon-chang, known as "the Apostle of Chungcheong-do". Yi Jon-chang openly declared himself the leader of Catholic believers in the Chungcheong region and carried out missionary work in the Naepo area. He was arrested in 1795 and, together with Jeong Yak-jong and others, was sentenced to death, being beheaded at Hwangsaebawi Rock in Gongju. The site is known as a representative historic location for the early spread of Catholicism in Korea.
