Stork Bawi Cheonjugyosungyo Bridge Site, Gongju
공주 황새바위 천주교순교유적 · 公州 황새바위 天主敎殉敎遺蹟

This is the site where Catholics arrested by the Chungcheong-do provincial government (gamyeong) were executed. Believers arrested at the Gongju provincial office, also called Uyeong (the Right Garrison), were held in a prison near present-day Gyo-dong Catholic Church before being brought here to be executed. Yi Jon-chang, known as "the Apostle of Naepo", was also beheaded here, and the Chimyeong ilgi (Diary of Martyrdom) records 337 martyrs executed at this site alone. After the Hwangsaebawi Sanctification Project Promotion Committee was formed in 1980, the Catholic Church purchased the site, and in 1985 it built a martyrs' memorial chapel and tomb and a martyrs' tower inscribed with the names of 248 martyrs. Since 1984 a priest in charge of the shrine has also been stationed there.
