Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the old temple site of Seobongsa Temple at the foot of Bongmyeongsan Mountain in Yongsan-ri, where foundation stones and retaining walls lie scattered about; the site has now been reclaimed as a tea field. According to records such as the Yeongbongsan Yongamsa and the Seobongsa Sajeok (Record of Seobongsa Temple), the temple is said to have been founded in the reign of King Nulji of Silla (417–457), when it was called Bongamsa Temple; it appears to have been renamed Seobongsa Temple during the Joseon period. In the sixth year of King Gwanghaegun of Joseon (1614), the monk Uihyeon rebuilt it, and the temple is said to have been of very great scale. Buddhist scriptures printed at Seobongsa Temple are held in the library of Seoul National University.
