Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krMadojin lay on the route taken from the late Goryeo period onward by the grain transport ships carrying tax grain collected in the Yeongnam and Honam regions. To defend this route against Japanese pirates seeking to plunder the ships, a fortress wall was built here in 1499, the fifth year of Yeonsangun's reign. A manho, a military official of senior fourth rank, was stationed at the site. According to the Yeojido Seo, an eighteenth-century geographic gazetteer, the fortress wall measured 890 cheok (about 270 m) in circumference and 1 cheok (about 3.7 m) in height. Today the remaining wall extends for a total of about 730 m. It was built with a foundation of large square or rectangular stones, topped with smaller stones measuring about 30 cm by 20 cm. Of the fortress site's total area of 4,237 ㎡, most is now privately owned, though stone-wall remains and other traces of the fortifications are preserved.
