Sacheon Waryongdongsa Temple Site is an old temple site located in Waryong Valley on Waryongsan Mountain. The name Waryongsa does not appear in Buddhist histories, nor is Okjeongsa, said to be its successor, recorded there; however, historical texts outside the Buddhist record — the Gyeongnamdoji, Jinyangji, Dongseongseungnam and Waryongsangi — record that, alongside the names of many hermitages, the temples Waryongsa, Baekcheonsa, Jeonseonsa and Heungbosa once stood on Waryongsan Mountain. These temples flourished until the end of the Goryeo period, then gradually declined under the Joseon dynasty's policy of favouring Confucianism over Buddhism, and even Baekcheonsa in Baekcheon Valley, which had survived the longest, is said to have burned down during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592-1598). The site is now covered by houses and paddy fields, but some foundation stones and part of a retaining wall remain, and fragments of roof tiles are still being excavated in the surrounding area.
