Gomorisanseong is a Three Kingdoms-period mountain fortress built encircling the summit of Gomosan Mountain (386.5 m above sea level). Gomosan stands at the southernmost end of the Pocheon Basin, in the upper reaches of the Pocheoncheon Stream. This area can be regarded as an ancient strategic point, built at Bideukjae Pass, which commanded the route linking the Cheorwon and Pocheon area to the north with the Hangang River area to the south. Old records contain no mention of Pocheon Gomorisanseong, and only traces of the walls remain, suggesting that the fortress was abandoned long ago. Most of the walls have now collapsed, making it difficult to establish their exact course. The total circumference is 822 m; most of it is an earthen rampart, though traces of combined earth-and-stone construction are found in some sections. The fortress as a whole is elongated north–south, higher in the south and lower in the north, a form thought to have been designed to defend against enemies invading from the south, the Hangang River area, toward the north, Pocheon and Cheorwon. A 2001 surface survey identified one gate site, seven building sites and one well site. Most of the buildings stood on the gentle slope running north from the mountain summit, where several terraces are thought to have been created to support them. Large quantities of soft-fired earthenware typical of the early Three Kingdoms period, specifically early Baekje, were found at the building sites, while almost no Goguryeo, Silla or Unified Silla artefacts have been found, leading to the conclusion that the fortress was built during the Hanseong Baekje period.
