A beacon station was a means of communication in former times, used to relay urgent news by torch fire and smoke. Men would climb a high mountain and light a fire, sending signals by smoke in the daytime and by firelight at night. The Sahwarang beacon was a branch beacon linking the middle section of the beacon route running from Dongnae in Gyeongsang Province to the central beacon station on Mokmyeoksan Mountain, now Namsan Mountain, in Seoul. Here it received signals from the Cheonseong coastal beacon mound on Gadeokdo Island to the east, and relayed them on to the Jangboksan beacon and the Yeoeumpo beacon in Changwon. According to local gazetteers, including the Ungcheon-eupji, the Sahwarang beacon had a staff of 100 men carrying out its duties. It went out of use in the 31st year of Emperor Gojong (1894), when the nationwide beacon-station system was abolished.
