Wanpohyeon Gosanseong Fortress, Changwon
창원 완포현 고산성 · 昌原 莞浦懸 古山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis mountain fortress, on Gosan Peak in Hyeon-dong, Jinhae-si, Gyeongnam, was built in 1384, the tenth year of King U of late Goryeo. It was also known as Wanhyangseong, Bibongsanseong, and Hyeondongsanseong, and was constructed to defend against the frequent incursions of Japanese pirates and to protect the local people. It is presumed, however, to have lost its administrative function once Wanpohyeon county was absorbed into Ungcheonhyeon county. At the mountain's summit, where the north and east walls meet, stands the Gosan beacon mound, once used to relay signal fires. Gate sites were placed on the east, north, and west walls — the south wall, built along the top of a cliff, had none — and the west wall had two such gate sites. The inner face of the wall was built in a stepped form of three to five tiers, and mounds were set at regular intervals inside the fortress along the east and south walls. At the corners of the ramparts, corner towers and chiseong (projecting sections of wall built outward from the main rampart) were constructed to make observation and command of the surroundings easier.
