Cheongnyongdae is said to have been the spot where Choe Chi-won, the great scholar of the late Unified Silla period, used to fish before he withdrew from the world and entered Jirisan Mountain. The rock bears the carved inscription 'Cheongnyongdae Chiwonseo' (靑龍臺致遠書), meaning 'Cheongnyongdae, written by Chiwon' — Chiwon being Choe Chi-won's courtesy name — and from the style of the calligraphy this is thought to be in his own hand. A stele, the Cheongnyongdae Stele, has recently been erected here by his descendants in his honour. It is said that at the time the tide once ebbed and flowed at this spot, but it has since become dry land.
