Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the sarangchae, or men's quarters, where Kim Jang-saeng (1548–1631), the great master of ritual studies (yehak) born in Yeonsan, lived in his later years; it occupies a site with fine views across to Gubongsan Mountain. On a spacious plot of more than 2,800 pyeong, a traditional unit of land area, the buildings stand in a line from south to north: the daemunchae (gate house), Eunnongjae — the sarangchae itself — the anchae (inner quarters), linked to it by a jungmun (middle gate) and sarangchae, and, further back, the gamyo (family shrine) enshrining the household's ancestors. To the left of the anchae stands a separate pavilion (byeoljang), in front of which is a pond surrounded by dense pagoda trees (hoehwanamu). Eunnongjae consists of four bays across the front and two bays along the side. It originally had a thatched roof, which has since been replaced with tiles, and it retains its original form relatively well.
