It stands on Hyeondalsan Mountain, on the boundary between Munbong-dong and Sarihyeon-dong in Ilsan-gu, Goyang. It was originally called Sodalsan Beacon or Sojildalsan Beacon, and was renamed Doksan Beacon in the late Joseon period. Doksan Beacon was a station on the Main Beacon Route of the Third Route: information originating at Yeodundae Beacon in Gangye, Pyeongan-do, and passing through Pyeongan-do and Hwanghae-do, was relayed from Daesan Beacon in Paju and passed on to Haepo Beacon in Goyang. Doksan Beacon is circular in plan, and four entrance structures survive; it measures 74m in circumference. Its ancillary facilities include a protective wall and five yeonjo, the hearths where signal fires were lit, which stand outside the protective wall and are arranged in a row so that the signal could be clearly seen from Haepo Beacon. Besides the defensive facilities and the yeonjo, the station also had buildings where the beacon guards lived and stored supplies. In the Goryeo period, beacon signals from across the country converged on Songaksan Mountain in Gaeseong; in the Joseon period, signals from five routes converged instead on Mongmyeoksan (Namsan) Mountain in Hanyang. Although the final destination of the signals changed with the transition from Goryeo to Joseon, some Goryeo-period beacon stations appear to have been reused under Joseon. Doksan Beacon is an important beacon site believed to date from the Goryeo period, and while most of the roughly 670 beacon stations built in the Joseon period have collapsed beyond recognition, Doksan Beacon remains relatively well preserved.
