Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Myeokjeolsan Mountain Site is an earthen fortification site of Baekje's Hanseong period. An excavation conducted in 2003 confirmed a variety of remains from the Hanseong period of Baekje, and among these, the interior of one storage pit was investigated. Subsequently, an academic excavation conducted in 2012 for the maintenance and restoration of the site newly revealed that it was an earthen fortification of the Hanseong period of Baekje. The site is located on the summit of Myeokjeolsan Mountain. The fortification is oval in plan, with its total circumference estimated at 300 m, and it currently survives along the southwestern edge of the summit. It was built using the technique of gyoho seongto (alternating rammed-earth layering), in which bedrock was excavated and levelled before soils of different qualities were piled up in irregular layers. Large quantities of Baekje pottery in the central Hanseong-period style were excavated from the fortification, including gobae (tall-stemmed cups), samjokgi (tripod vessels), gidae (pottery stands) and gaebae (lidded bowls). Notably, the surfaces of the pottery bear patterns incised or stamped with bird-claw designs (jojongmun) and various other symbols. Based on the excavated pottery, the fortification is judged to have been built in the mid-4th century and used until the 5th century. Given its geographical location at a gateway to the Yellow Sea and the large quantities of Baekje pottery found within it, this fortification is thought to have served as a trading base with China at the time and as a military facility for managing water transport.
